Our first year with a robotics team at Heber Springs High School has been a great learning experience for all of us. The Panthers robotics team was able to pay for our registration entirely through two grants, including the $4,000 FRC Rookie grant (first year). We had several local sponsors: Red River Dodge, First National Bank and our school Interact Club. We have been so grateful for the school and community support!
Thanks to the efforts of Landon Johnson, Lawrence Baureis, Cole Thomas, Parker Hill, Ty Yates and Reagan Buell, we were ranked 17th in our Regional Competition and even competed in the first rounds of the finals! We are so proud of our team!
These are the biggest lessons we’ve learned this year:
Start early! We didn’t find out about the competition until more than a month into the school year. Next year, we should be able to build on the progress we’ve made.
Build relationships with sponsors. We hope to continue and grow our relationships with the sponsors we have, as well as cultivate new ones!
Find students that can commit the time necessary for success. There was a lot of interest in the beginning of the program, dropping off to a few dedicated students by the time of the Regional Competition. Even fewer were able to participate in the off-season event. However, those students were fantastic!
We need to work on cultivating talent. On the flip side, we need to drum up interest and help students learn the skills to succeed in the coming year. We will be working on using the lessons we learned from this year (and leaning on our now-experienced seniors) to help more students be actively involved this coming year!
“The robotics program has been critical in shaping and preparing me for the next stage in my life: college. Going into last year, I had no idea what I planned to study in college and was leaning towards majoring in Biology. As the year went on and I became more involved in robotics, I discovered that engineering was far more interesting and engaging than anything I had studied before.
Robotics allowed me to build technical skills such as familiarity with electrical, mechanical, and control systems while sharpening broader skills such as learning to design and work more efficiently as a team and making the best use of a tight budget.
Because of robotics, I was able to practice my leadership skills and develop practical skills with electrical components in a 90% hands-on learning environment. But most importantly, I discovered a new passion which I plan to pursue next year in college.”
~Landon Johnson
“Robotics has given me a much better understanding of how engineering works, in terms of making measurements and trying to envision designs for a robot.
It showed me that progress and success is possible without a large robotics team and without a lot of resources. It also showed me the importance of teamwork, especially with a smaller group. You are more stretched on what has to get done, which means you have to be willing and committed to taking extra time to work on it.
I also learned not to be afraid to reach out and ask for help when I was stuck and needed it.”
~Lawrence Baureis

Heber Springs School District has been made aware of an alarming social media challenge that is aimed towards children and young adults, called the ‘Momo Challenge.’ We urge all parents to become aware of this threat and monitor their children’s use of social media, apps, and the internet.
The “Momo Challenge” begins with a chat that encourages the receiver to do small tasks and provide photo documentation once completed. It eventually escalates to violent acts including inflicting self-harm, which can be detrimental to impressionable and vulnerable viewers.
Common apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Fortnite, and YOUTube Kids have all reported instances of the challenge.
